After nearly half a century of iron-handed rule, Fidel Castro has resigned as President of Cuba. There will undoubtedly be jubilation here in Florida, where vast numbers of Cubans have been waiting and praying for this day. Those over 50 hope Cuban will return to some semblance of their fond, foggy memories of a lazy tropical paradise, while those under 50, who have never known Cuba without communism, are anxious to see the island nation transition into vibrant capitalism. No matter what happens next, one thing is for sure–without Castro as the central figure, Cuba’s focus is forever changed.
