The New 6-Word Motto For The U.S.–Coming Soon To A T-Shirt Near You!

The New York Times

announced the winner of the 2009 contest to find a six-word motto for the United States. In a reprise of last year’s contest, originated by Freakonomics co-author Stephen J. Dubner , more than 300 submissions were pared down to 50, then down to the final 6 before readers were allowed to vote for their fav. The final 6 were:

Consumption’s the Cure That Ails Us

We Will Get It Right, Eventually

We Are Too Big to Fail

The Streets Are Paved With CASH4GOLD.COM

Learn to Live Within Your Means

Wow, Can You Believe This Place?

 

And the winner is…(drum roll, please)….

We Are Too Big To Fail Can’t say it’s my favorite, as it seems like the attitude that got us into this mess in the first place. But then, the attitude of the contest is defiantly snarky. My personal favs didn’t even make the top 6. I was torn between  "Breathe in. Breathe out. Move on." And "Lets produce something instead of consuming" The Takeaway has reprinted the full list of the top 50. Some I considered:

Health before wealth, community before self

Vast resources. Vast diversity. Vast promise.

America: scrounging for change

Incur no new debt today
